I am delighted to introduce ACCA's global theme for 2009-2010 which is 'Accountants for business'.
The accountancy profession has long embraced the value of accountants in business, and with 60% of our members working in the corporate sector, it is an issue we are acutely aware of.
This theme will enable us to emphasise a new, value-adding agenda for accountants in whatever roles they are employed, and promote the role of accountants as promoters of sound business practices, champions of sustainable business development and identifiers of value drivers which lead to high-performing organisations.
In choosing this theme, ACCA will set an agenda for business which puts sound financial management at its heart. We will highlight the importance of accountants to fostering long term corporate success and on the unprecedented –and growing - need for financial skills.
We will use the 12 months ahead also focus on the essential role accountants play in supporting the small business sector, which represents 95% of all enterprises. We will also be looking at the new challenges facing accountants in large corporates – these include risk management and how to effectively deliver
the finance function while also focusing on analysis, risk and the overall integrity of financial performance.
There has never been a more crucial time for the accountant for business to show their true value. Over the last 18 months as a systemic banking collapse has evolved into a significant worldwide recession, a range of presumptions about accounting, organisations and society have been radically called into question.
Our campaign will seek to answer the issues raised around our profession and demonstrate how accountants can play a leading role in restoring business confidence and fortune. I look forward to keeping you updated on its achievements in the coming months.
I appreciate the initiative taken by ACCA in promoting the role of accountants in today's ever changing business environment, and hope that other professional accountancy firms will also follow!!
