Ronald Mukasa from Uganda was introduced to ACCA through a presentation by PricewaterhouseCoopers (Uganda) during his final year at university and started studying for his ACCA Qualification in February 2006 after joining PricewaterhouseCoopers (Uganda). 'The presenters really opened my eyes to the world of opportunity a career in accountancy could bring,' says Ronald.
'Opting for ACCA was an easy choice to make,' says Ronald. 'In Uganda, ACCA is not only "a choice", it is "the choice". Its global reach and the opportunities that it presents are difficult to ignore.'
Ronald works as an audit senior at PricewaterhouseCoopers (Uganda), a job offered to him after he finished his bachelor's degree in statistics at Makerere University, Uganda. 'I work with various clients ranging from banks to non-governmental organisations, and with the support of PwC, I am working towards achieving the practical experience requirements of ACCA membership' he explains.
'ACCA presents a challenge like no other,' says Ronald, who scored the joint highest marks for Paper 2.6 in the June 2007 exam session. 'Balancing excellence at work and at studies is something facing many students and finding ways to achieve this can be difficult.'
Ronald hopes that his student blogs will give him the opportunity to share his experiences with students around the world. 'I am confident it will be a great learning opportunity for me,' he says. 'I am especially interested in discussing the challenges facing ACCA students who are studying at the same time as working. I would also like to discuss the relevancy of ACCA to the societies we live in. I am keen to encourage my fellow students to see themselves as a gift to the society and hence emphasise the need to live with integrity and uphold ethical values.'
In the future, Ronald would like to exploit his interest in investment in Africa. 'I would be interested in helping to grow local businesses to a level of listing on the stock exchange. I hope that I can use my knowledge and skills to advise local business in order to enable them to grow to greater heights,' he says.
'I am a strong believer that professionalism is an opportunity to make the lives of the community better and the ability to perform your professional tasks with excellence will have a lasting impact on the community. I believe that as accountants, or accountants in the making, we have a responsibility more far reaching than we sometimes care to admit.'
Ronald has now passed his ACCA exams, completed the relevant experience and has been an ACCA member since December 2008.
