Congratulations to all those who passed their papers and especially those who qualified this time round. It is a great achievement and it goes along way to confirm that the sky is indeed the limit for you.
At one point I believed that ACCA was the 'ticket' to the bus of great career achievement but I have come to notice that it is not just the 'ticket' but the 'road' or 'channel'. In this I mean that getting the exams out of the way is just the beginning of the journey and not the end. We have to endeavour to continuously develop ourselves. I believe strongly that the world is more interested in what we do and not just what we know. The ACCA Qualification very easily communicates to our prospective employers what we know but what they are actually interested in is what we do. We have to ensure that we practice what we have studied (all through our ACCA studies) in our work places in order to convert the information on the pages of the text book into practical solutions.
The new syllabus has given increased emphasis to specific areas like corporate governance and I believe that it is important for our workmates and employers to notice these changes in the solutions we deliver and the way we do our work. The public generally has a great deal of trust in accountants and they may easily believe any thing we tell them. This further emphasises the need for us to deliver our services with absolute care.
P1 – Professional Accountant explains various aspects of corporate governance and the need for accountants to act ethically. We can not afford to take the topics that are discussed in this paper lightly because some of the issues that are discussed are indeed the corner stones of accounting as a profession. One of the biggest challenges in my country is corruption and this corruption is perpetuated by individuals. I believe that as professionals, we owe a duty to the general public not to excel in our studies but practice those values that are repeated through our ACCA studies. In light of the corporate failures in the past including large players like Enron (at the start of the 21st century), we have a very big role to ensure that the public can build and maintain trust in all of us. Therefore as an affiliate or student, you are an ambassador of the profession and if we don’t practice what the public already expects us to know, we shall have failed.
In conclusion, lets all remember that this is simply the beginning of a very long, challenging and rewarding journey and the only thing more important than passing the papers is actually practising what we have learnt. One of the best places to start is by completing our practical experience requirements (PER).
